In the Mood for Love (2000)

In the Mood for Love (2000) still

Wong Kar-wai · 99m · DCP

Hong Kong, 1962. Neighbors Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen discover their spouses are having an affair. Meeting to discuss what to do, they end up quietly falling in love. A landmark of Hong Kong cinema, In the Mood for Love distills Wong Kar-wai’s enduring preoccupation with longing and missed chances. Unseen spouses haunt their encounters, while the scrutiny of a close-knit community keeps desire unspoken. These are love’s best and worst years, for two people who never quite find the courage to be together. Once they miss their chance, they keep missing each other.

Screening presented by Night Owls. Followed by a discussion with Daniel Morgan and Agnes Callard. Free admission for UCID holders.

Nosferatu (1922)

Nosferatu (1922) still

F.W. Murnau · 89m · Digital

Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent from a small town in 1838 Germany, is dispatched by his employer to seal a deal with a new client in Transylvania, Count Orlok. Soon after arriving at Orlok’s residence, Hutter begins to suspect his host is a vampire. Meanwhile, Hutter’s wife back home becomes possessed by Orlok as the vampire makes his way to the German town, bringing death and chaos. A landmark of German Expressionism, Siegfried Kracauer argued that the figure of Count Orlok represented the German psyche’s simultaneous fear of and fascination with the specter of fascism.

This screening will be located at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, with live organ accompaniment by Dennis Scott. Admission is free for UCID and Doc Films quarter pass holders. General admission is $20.

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) still

Frank Capra · 118m · 35mm

On the eve of his honeymoon, Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) visits his two beloved aunts (Josephine Hull, Jean Adair) to inform them of his newlywed status. The pair of kindly old ladies have their own surprise in store for their nephew: a growing collection of dead bodies in the cellar, belonging to a string of lonely men they cheerfully admit to poisoning with arsenic-spiked elderberry wine. Frank Capra’s darkly hilarious screwball classic puts an absurd, homicidal spin on the family drama.

Convinced that his lawyer purposefully botched his defense, Cady sets his sights on vengeance, launching a relentless campaign of terror against former public defender Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), his wife (Jessica Lange), and daughter (Juliette Lewis). As the threat of danger escalates, it becomes clear that Cady has something terrible in store for the family.

Moonstruck (1987)

Moonstruck (1987) still

Norman Jewison · 102m · 35mm

Under a fat, conspiratorial moon, a Brooklyn widow engaged to a man she doesn’t love falls hopelessly for his hot-tempered, one-handed baker brother, and promptly loses all good sense. Cher won an Oscar for looking gorgeous while yelling “Snap out of it!” Nicolas Cage, has never been more Nicolas Cage. Everyone in this movie is furious, romantic, and Italian. Moonstruck is the rare rom-com with real teeth and real opera — and it still just wants you to fall in love.
