A Traveler’s Needs (2024)

A Traveler’s Needs (2024) still

Hong Sang-soo · 90m · DCP

Isabelle Huppert and Hong Sang-soo’s third collaboration, shot in two weeks, once again locates the actress as a foreigner in Korea. This time she is Iris, a French teacher who has a peculiar approach to language and, in her conversations with students and strangers, uses words and translation to get to poetry and feeling. Hong’s increasingly minimalist and digital approach still preserves, in Huppert’s words, “the power and scale of cinema.”

Infinity Pool (2023)

Infinity Pool (2023) still

Brandon Cronenberg · 117m · DCP

It’s hard to mention Brandon Cronenberg’s third feature film without acknowledging the shadow of his father’s twisted, gory influence. But especially in Infinity Pool, the younger Cronenberg establishes his own cold corporate hellscape among the pantheon of body horror greats. Set on a tropical playground for the wealthy, Infinity Pool pulls no punches and will leave you gasping for more punishment by the time it is through.

C’est Pas Moi (2024)

C’est Pas Moi (2024) still

Leos Carax · 42m · DCP

Carax’s latest is an answer to a question posed for an exhibition that didn’t happen: “Where are you, Leos Carax?” One does not need to intimately know Carax’s work to appreciate the free-form introspection that the filmmaker engages with across materials that range in origin from personal photos to Bresson. Carax’s pained concern with images and their rapid aggression is embedded in each frame of the film, which both explicitly and implicitly recalls Godard.
